As the COVID19 pandemic started spreading around the world in February 2020, graphics of the virus flashed at us from TV screens and I thought “they could make nice teapots”.
I extrapolated the most distinct features of different Corona viruses to make teapot versions of COVID-19, SARS and the Rhinovirus. With Swine Flu (H1N1) I took the liberty of improvising, instead of spikes it got snouts.
While making the teapots, COVID19 started spreading in New Zealand. The “Locked Down” teapot was made as New Zealand shut down for a five week long lockdown on March 25th, 2020.
The Virus teapots were on show at Toi Gallery at Pataka in a group exhibition that opened just as society eased its way back into normality, on June 20th, 2020.
