MAKARA STONE BOWLS

It’s hard to beat the natural forms of nature. For a slip-casting module during my studies, I made a mould from a smooth oval stone to make a vase. Enjoying the organic form I started exploring the use of stones to mould bowls. I collected stones in different sizes from Makara beach on the west coast of Wellington that when made, fit inside each other as nesting bowls. Decorated with a subtle pinch of sand from different beaches around New Zealand, the bowls have become a staple of my Sand Range
