A composition that marks a shift from functional ware to sculpture mode
Much of my work springs from the set of sand research cups that I made in my early days of learning to throw cylinders on the pottery wheel. Transitioning into sculpture mode during my course of study, I had an idea to bunch up cups like a ball of paper to physically move on from tableware. The sculpture was on show at the Quarts Museum of Studio Ceramics in Whanganui in the Emerging Practitioner Award Exhibition in 2018.
A separate concept followed, triggered by recycling a year’s worth of clay scraps with different sand; a recycled cup vase with lots of (symbolic) handles emerged from the cup scraps.
